Not everyone is actually cut out to be a building contractor and few lads leave school thinking that they want to be building contractors so how come we end up having so many good building contractors?
One of my good friends back in the eighties was an embassy official from the French Embassy in London. For various reasons he had spent most of his life in London and when I got to know him I was surprised to find that his biggest interest was building projects and working with his hands on some piece of timber or other.
It was quite interesting and reassuring to meet someone who had climbed up the ranks as an embassy attaché to be so interested in working with his hands and it was plain to see that he was passionate about building.
I don’t think I had ever met someone before who confessed that he would be happier in his workshop than having to go into Kensington every day and it was refreshing. I mean lets face it, going into the building trade was never seen as a feather on your cap. Almost all of the tradesmen that I had ever met had drifted into the job rather than actually deciding to peruse an interest in the subject.
At one point I met this young guy working as a builder and when I asked him how come he ended up as a building contractor he replied “that was all I could do…” which left me a bit speechless because they way he saw things was that if you couldn’t do anything else you could always work as a builder or building contractor.
It’s a bit mad really because no two builders are alike and whilst few of them went to school thinking they would be builders a high number of people from all walks of life actually make excellent building contractors.
One of the toughest aspects of any building project is trying to ensure that you get a decent building contractor. Apart from the usual checks such as references etc it is also important to get an understanding as to what his key skills are and why he entered the profession.
Most builders have one decent trade to which they are accomplished an other skills are usually secondary. Just because someone is really good with their hands and does beautiful joinery doesn’t mean that you will get an outstanding job.
The key qualities and skills to look for are:
Add to that some construction skills and you are clearly on the way to a successful project.
The character of the building contractor is far more important that the actual construction skills that he has acquired. Try to rate the character as much as you do the building contractor skills.
